Overview
ADT hire is selected according to payload, haul distance, underfoot conditions, loading machine size, cycle times and required production per hour. Articulated dump trucks are designed for off-road haulage where rigid road tippers may struggle with traction, gradients or poor ground conditions.
The loader or excavator must be matched to the ADT fleet. If the loading unit is too small, trucks wait. If truck capacity is too small, the excavator wastes time loading too many units.
Key ADT selection questions
- What is the haul distance and cycle time?
- Is the ground wet, uneven, steep or soft?
- What excavator or loader will load the trucks?
- How many tonnes or cubic metres must be moved per day?
- Will the ADTs operate on mine, quarry or civil sites with specific safety requirements?
Fleet planning advice
- 30 ton ADTs are often paired with 30–40 ton excavators.
- 45 ton ADTs perform best with larger excavators or high-capacity front end loaders.
- Water bowsers, graders and dozers often support ADT haul roads to reduce delays.

FAQs
How do I know which machine size to hire?
Start with the project type, material, access conditions and required output. If production is important, the machine should be matched to the supporting fleet rather than selected in isolation.
Can Project Plant Hire help choose the right equipment?
Yes. Send your site details, hours, location and application, and we can recommend suitable hire options and supporting machines.
Should I choose wet hire or dry hire?
Wet hire is usually better when experienced operators are required or productivity matters. Dry hire may suit clients with their own trained operators and site management.
